A nice introduction to biopolitics

This is a nice introduction to the study of the relationship between the life sciences and politics (sometimes referred to as biopolitics). The price tag for this volume is frustrating (something other authors of specialized volumes can speak to as well), reducing the odds that potentially interested readers will look at this book.

That said, though, this is a solid introduction to a field that carries great promise. The authors show nicely the contributions already made by biopolitics in standard areas within political science, such as theory, comparative politics, international relations, political behavior, methodology, and public policy. The latter is especially worth noting, since our knowledge of biology and evolutionary theory has considerable implications for public policy. For instance, there is a nice discussion of the policy implications regarding drug addiction that come from our understanding of the brain's functioning.

This is a well-written book, and it is certainly worth reading by those who are intrigued by the putative linkage between biology, the life sciences, and politics.
